Media24 newspaper shutdown 'will limit access to news'
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Director of the Centre for Journalism at Wits University, Dr Dinesh Balliah, believes the shutting down of iconic Media24 newspapers will limit access to news.
The media giant said on Tuesday it would stop printing five newspapers: Beeld, Rapport, City Press, Daily Sun and Soccer Laduma.
The digital editions of Volksblad and Die Burger Oos-Kaap, as well as the digital hub SNL24 will be discontinued.
The shutdown, which is expected in October, is expected to impact around 400 workers.
Balliah said newspapers remain a draft of history that cannot be edited.
"Most of us in the industry are shocked by the shutdown by Media24. We expect that there will be a ripple effect through the industry through the course of the rest of this year.
"Shutting down print titles has the immediate effect of limiting news for most of our communities. Print readers share news that is not always possible with online news.
"The newspaper itself is the first draft of history that doesn't get changed or edited during the course of the day. It remains in its original form.”
Dr Balliah said the impact will be felt all the way down to the people selling the newspapers on street corners.
