Members must consider quality of potential candidates: Zweli Mkhize

ANC Treasurer-General, Zweli Mkhize says party members must discuss issues of change in leadership by looking at the quality of potential candidates and not their names.

Mkhize made the comment while speaking on the sidelines of the party’s 105th anniversary celebrations at KwaDukuza Recreational Grounds.

President Jacob Zuma joined the ANC’s provincial leadership in attendance and addressed thousands of supporters there.

Mkhize says party members must take policies and leadership qualities into account when debating the issue.

"When we deal with names, we then match them against the particular characteristics of a leader that we need - a leader capable of unifying our people, of selfless service and also ensuring that all our people find space for them to openly discuss issues inside the organisation," he said.

While KZN chairperson, Sihle Zikalala feels government needs to act quickly and boldly when dealing with the appropriation of land in the province - irrespective of compensation. He says land is just one of the issues the party will tackle this year.

"We are supporting and we will be working with the government to ensure that we fight political killings and violence in the taxi industry. We will also work to ensure the allocation of business to SMMEs and co-operatives," he said.
