Meshoe: ACDP vindicated by reopening of churches

African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) leader Reverend Kenneth Meshoe says he feels vindicated by the resumption of religious gatherings under level 3 of the lockdown.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Tuesday that all religious gatherings will be allowed from June 1, provided they comply with strict regulations.

Meshoe says he was labelled irresponsible when he called for churches to reopen.

"Many of the people who said they thought the church is the place where people would be infected, but they didn't know when infections took place in Bloemfontein, and South Korea is was because there were no regulations in place.”

In a televised address on Tuesday, Ramaphosa said churches, synagogues, mosques and impels will be limited to 50 people or less depending on the space available.

Meshoe admits the limitation of 50 people might be a problem at some religious institutions.

"One it is clear that churches are observing the necessary protocol and there are no allegations of infections - when we go to level 2 we will ask for the number to be increased to 100 people," he says.
