Meyiwa accused ‘freely’ offered info on sweater he wore on day of murder

A witness in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has told the High Court in Pretoria High that accused number one voluntarily informed them of the whereabouts of a sweater he wore on the day of the soccer star’s death.

Lead investigator in the murder case, Sergeant Batho Mogola, continued her testimony on Tuesday.

According to Mogola, the accused, Bongani Ntanzi, told the police the sweater they were looking for was at his home in KwaNongoma.

It is alleged that Ntanzi volunteered the information when police came to search his room in Rustenburg following his arrest.

“And when the accused mentioned that this hoodie was at home in Nongoma, did he say that freely and voluntarily?” questioned state prosecutor, Advocate George Baloyi.

“That’s correct, my lord, he said that freely and voluntarily. Out of his own free will, my lord, in his sober senses without any due influence,” responded Mogola.

Evidence before the court by state witness Constable Sizwe Zungu claims Ntanzi wore a black sweater on the night of Meyiwa’s killing.

Zungu also told the court that Ntanzi changed from grey to black clothing after returning to the Basotho Hostel on the same night.

Furthermore, Ntanzi has been identified by witnesses in the trial as one of the suspects who was present in the house on the day that Meyiwa was killed.

Zungu, who sat and drank with all five accused at Basotho Hostel in Vosloorus on the day of Meyiwa’s murder, told the court that he could recognise Ntanzi as one of the men on the police’s identikit.

Meyiwa’s close friend Tumelo Madlala also identified Ntanzi from the dock as one of the two intruders who entered the Khumalo household nine years ago.

Mogola is expected to continue with cross-examination on Wednesday.
