Meyiwa death doesn’t haunt me, witness tells court

One of slain soccer star Senzo Meyiwa’s best friends has told the High Court in Pretoria that the goalkeeper’s death does not haunt him.

The State began its cross-examination of Mthokozi Thwala on Thursday.

It was his third day on the witness stand.

Thwala is being cross-examined by counsel for accused number one and two, Advocate Sipho Ramosepele.

“Would it be fair to say to you that the death of your best friend continues to haunt you to this day,” Ramosepele asked Thwala.

“It does not haunt me,” Thwala responded.

Thwala’s first day of cross-examination was marred by some inconsistencies which led the state to invoke Section 190 of the Criminals Procedure Act.

The state pointed to inconsistencies between Thwala’s written statement, which he gave in October 2014, and his oral testimony in court.

This led him to retract his earlier testimony on one of the people in the house on the night of Meyiwa’s death, Longwe Twala, and his proximity to the crime scene.

Twala's earlier testimony stated that Longwe touched the gun which killed Meyiwa.

“Zandi’s boyfriend let go of the firearm, which was still in the suspect’s hand. What is your comment," asked state prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi.

“Zandi’s boyfriend went to the first suspect and pushed him and ran outside," Thwala responded.

The trial continues on Friday.
