Meyiwa murder trial to resume in October

The trial against five men accused of killing soccer star Senzo Meyiwa will resume in October.

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng

The case, which was expected to conclude on Friday, finished a day earlier than expected.

Defence counsel for the five accused requested that the court be adjourned early to allow them an opportunity to comb through the nearly 800 pictures downloaded from the phone of accused number three Mthobisi Mncube.

A total of 784 pictures were downloaded from Mncube's phone, with only 46 used as evidence in the trial.

Sipho Ramosepele, who represents accused number one and two, said the adjournment will give them time to consult with their clients.

"My lord, we therefore request that we be given the opportunity to further consult with our respective clients regarding the photos we have received. Although personally, I have already cross-examined, certain issues may arise. Thus, I am going to view the photos privately and then consult with my client. So we request that we be given the opportunity to consult."

The testimony of Constable Skhumbuzo Zungu will have to stand down until the trial resumes on 2 October.

Zungu, who is related to accused Muzi Sibiya, gave explosive testimony in the High Court in Pretoria last week.

He is the only witness who has linked all five of the accused to Meyiwa's murder.

Zungu has also been able to identify one of the guns which is believed to have killed Meyiwa.

He told the court that Mncube was carrying a 9mm parabellum, which reeked of smoke on the night Meyiwa was killed.

Expert evidence has suggested that the gun found on Mncube on the day of his arrest in a separate case in 2015 is the same firearm that was used to kill Meyiwa.
