Midday Edition: Hewitt sentenced

BOB HEWITT - Former Grand Slam tennis star Bob Hewitt has been sentenced to an effective six years behind bars. 


This includes eight years each for every rape conviction and two years for indecent assault.  


He must also pay the total of a R100 000 to the Department of Justice for its campaigns about violence against women and children. 


Judge Bert Bam sentenced Hewitt in the High Court in Pretoria, following his conviction on two counts of rape and one of indecent assault while he was coaching tennis to young girls in 1980s. 


Judge Bam said Hewitt abused his father figure role, and showed no remorse some 30 years later while the crimes are still haunting the victims. 


While the women are sitting side-by-side in the public gallery, Hewitt started out in front of him, while Bam said he took Hewitt's age of 75 into account, and added that it is not uncommon to sentence an ageing man.

EMMANUEL SITHOLE - The family of Mozambican national Emmanuel Sithole, say they are relieved following the ruling in the Alexandra Magistrates Court, not to grant bail to two of the four suspects charged with his killing. 


Sithole was attacked in broad daylight last month, and died in hospital. 


The court found that there is no evidence that the two would not try to flee, while out on bail.

SMALL BUSINESS BUDGET - Small Business Development Minister, Lindiwe Zulu says her department has been meeting with foreigners working in the informal sector, to discuss the recent spate of attacks on foreigners. 

 


She is expected to table her budget in Parliament this week and says she doesn't feel that there has been an exodus of foreigners over the past month...


 


MMUSI MAIMANE - Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane says he doesn't trust the government, because of inconsistent policies.
