Midrand crash claims one life
The N1 north in Midrand has been partially closed off to traffic after the fatal multi-vehicle crash that happened at around midnight.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the crash involved a VW Polo and a Volvo truck.
"It is alleged that both vehicles were travelling north along the N1 when the truck collided into the rear of the Polo.
"Both vehicles lost control and the truck collided with the pole barricade and the vehicle overturned and lost its load.
"Unfortunately, the truck driver sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene. The Polo driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to Tembisa Hospital."
Fihla adds it will still take some time to clear all the lanes.
"Currently the recovery team is on scene to salvage the lost load and to clear the accident scene for traffic to flow.
"Motorists are urged to exercise patience whilst the scene is being processed and rather avoid and use alternative routes."
