In a video taken at the scene, the police’s VIP officers could be seen dragging one of the motorists out of the car. Two of the men were also kicked by the heavily armed officers as they lay on the ground.

The union's comments come after police watchdog Ipid confirmed that preliminary information indicates that the victims are military trainees in civilian clothes.

Sandu national secretary Pikkie Greeff says the union is ready to assist the victim should it be confirmed that they are indeed military personnel.

"SANDU condemns the despicable criminality displayed by alleged VIP protectors. Since the incident, reports have claimed that the victims are trainee members of the SANDF. However, SANDU has not been able to verify same as fact.

"Should the victims be soldiers under training, SANDU urges them to contact the union in order for it to assist the victims in the laying of criminal charges &issuing a lawsuit against the Minister of Police & SAPS." said Greeff

Meanwhile the South African National Defence Force spokesperson Andries Mokoena-Mahapa said they could not confirm if the victims are indeed the military personnel.

"There is no respond from SANDF because the incident happened between members of SAPS and some members in civilian clothes, I don't know if those members belong to SANDF."
