Millions of traffic fines ruled invalid

Incorrect mailing of traffic fines have now made them invalid.
Millions of fines issued to motorists in Johannesburg and Pretoria since 2008 will be scrapped following a North Gauteng High Court ruling on Friday.
The court ruled that fines where traffic officials did not comply with the under the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) Act's conditions is invalid.
Fines 4 U approached the court, saying the fines were not sent by registered mail.

The group's Cornelia van Niekerk says people paid their fines to avoid a block on their vehicles when they renew their licenses.
"There are thousands of people who drive without a vehicle license, because they have traffic fines that they don't know about," says Van Niekerk.
Van Niekerk explains why some of the fines are invalid and why people should not pay them.
