Ministers and deputy ministers will all be taking a salary cut over the next three months as the country battles the outbreak of coronavirus.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday that he will, along with ministers, deputy ministers and provincial premiers, be donating a third of his salary to the Solidarity Fund.
The fund, set up to pull money together to fight Covid-19 and limit its economic pain on families, has already raised some R2 billion.
“An essential part of our response to this emergency is the principle of solidarity from across society and individuals have come forward to provide financial and other forms of assistance,” said Ramaphosa.
“In support of this effort we have decided that the president, the deputy president, ministers and deputy ministers will take a one third cut to their salaries for the next three months.”
Ramaphosa added: “I must say that the premiers have also joined in and they will also take a one third cut and donate that to the Solidarty Fund.”
The president encouraged the private sector to follow suit and also donate a portion of their salaries to the fund.
