Five suspects, including the baby's nanny, has been arrested.

The baby is undergoing check-ups in hospital but is expected to be home with his parents soon.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini says the 13-month-old baby went missing in the Brackendowns area on Wednesday after the nanny took him for a walk and never returned.

"Police launched an intelligence-driven operation, keeping close tabs on the numerous phone calls where suspects demanded an R6 million ransom from the parents, in return for the safe release of the child.

The initial two suspects were arrested at the ransom-drop-off point in Ekurhuleni west. Further investigations led police to Windmill Park where the domestic worker and another suspected co-conspirator were also arrested."

The suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday and will face charges of kidnapping.

Of the five suspects, four are Zimbabwean nationals, while the fifth suspect is South African. Dlamini says the nationality of the suspects is important, as people need to conduct the necessary background checks when hiring someone.

"People who are employing foreign nationals, they must make sure that they verify with police that they don't have any criminal record."
