Missing pigeons worries NSPCA

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) says it’s worried after a large number of pigeons failed to return to their Sasolburg loft in the Free State.

The pigeons took off in the Northern Cape at the start of February for the annual Million Dollar Pigeon Race and were expected to make their way back to the Sasolburg loft on the same day.

More than 1500 pigeons took part in the competition but less than 700 have since returned.

NSPCA senior inspector Arno De Klerk says they fear the worst.

"They are actually domesticated animals, used to be fed, used to being watered, cared for in a loft. Now these birds are liberated in the wild, in territories that they don't know where they can be hit by moving vehicles, fly into fences, they can be caught by predators.

"The race takes place during one of the harshest months. The scarcity of water sources along the route is bad and also adverse weather conditions play a role."

Every year pigeon enthusiasts put up big bucks towards the sport.

"People have taken advantage in a way to bet on these animals, to choose a winner and actually win large amounts of money if these pigeons return back to the loft."

De Klerk adds that its concerning that the pigeon racing fraternity is not up in arms over the loss.

"The NSPCA is opposed to the use of animals for sports and for personal gain."

The tally of missing pigeons over the entire season has risen close to 3000, according to the NSPCA.
