Mbeki spoke at the University of South Africa (Unisa) on Wednesday night.

He slammed former president Jacob Zuma for campaigning for the breakaway uMkhonto weSizwe Party, while at the same time claiming to be a member of the ANC.

Zuma has been announced as the presidential candidate for the newly formed MK Party during the upcoming general elections.

He is also candidate number one on the Umkhonto we Sizwe Party list for the National Assembly in the 29 May polls, despite the IEC saying people sentenced to more than 12 months' imprisonment are ineligible to stand for the elections.

Mbeki warned that the MK Party is run by the same people who destroyed the South African Revenue Services (Sars) during Zuma’s tenure as head of state.

“You can’t say I remain a member of the ANC, but I am going to support a party which is going to campaign to defeat the ANC. That doesn’t make sense. One of those two things is wrong,” the former president said.

“In terms of these breakaways from the ANC, take that break away; you can understand that. It is led by the same people who tried to destroy Sars. This is exactly the same people.”

Mbeki also touched on the issued faced by the formation of coalitions and breakaway parties.

"The question we must ask is, where do we want South Africa to be? In terms of employment, industrialisation and so on, we do not know where we want political parties to be and who will get us there.

:When you read all the political party manifestos, all of them are saying we will get you there, but who do you believe?" asked Mbeki.

He said there is a major political struggle that has to take place based on the proper understanding of the state of the nation.
