Mkhize made the announcement during a press briefing on the donations by the Chinese government to help the country fight the spread of the coronavirus.
Mkhize said cumulatively 87 022 tests have been conducted for Covid-19.
“We are now seeing a lot more of the testing that is coming from the public sector, we have teams that are out there screening our communities.
“We believe that this is the way that South Africa will be able to deal with this pandemic, by sending out a lot of teams to identify people who might be at risk and are tested before they land up in the hospital.”
Gauteng is still the epicentre of the outbreak with 909 cases, followed by the Western Cape on 643.
