Mkhwebane’s focus will be on aid provided by the state.

The province is in the midst of disaster after floods devastated some areas, including Durban, Ntuzuma, Inanda, Molweni, Ballito, Umdloti, as well as other districts outside of eThekwini.

Close to 400 people have died in what has now been classified as one of the worst natural disasters seen by the country in recent years.

The province has also been declared a disaster area as government ramps up search and rescue operations, as well as mop-up operations.

Mkhwebane says she will keep close watch that government makes good on its promise to assist the affected families.

“We call for the state to urgently provide shelter, food, blankets and re-issue documents such as birth certificate to the affected. The rebuilding of public infrastructure also needs to commence as soon as conditions are conducive,” Mkhwebane adds.
