MKP, DA seek criminal probe into Mchunu

The MK Party has opened a criminal case against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya at Pretoria's Brooklyn Police Station.

This is for perjury and defeating the ends of justice following allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi

He claimed that Mchunu and Sibiya are complicit in a syndicate, controlled by drug cartels and business people, who have infiltrated organised crime in the country.

MK Party’s David Skosana told the SABC that accountability is key.

“ The fact that the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption can be influenced by politicians in favour of criminals is extremely dangerous,” he said.

“I strongly urge the president to subject everyone implicated in this matter to a judicial inquiry as soon as possible. I think General Mkhwanazi, as well, must be subjected to that.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised to get to the bottom of the allegations when he returns from the BRICS summit in Brazil

Political analyst Zakhele Ndlovu believes Ramaphosa could redeploy Mchunu, saying the ANC will want to be seen as taking decisive action amid mounting public pressure and outrage.

"A lot of people sympathise with Mkhwanazi. It seems courageous and brave. The ANC does not want to be seen as a party that condones corruption. Within the ANC, he is not going to occupy any senior position."

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance will also lay criminal charges against Mchunu in Cape Town on Thursday.

The party has accused the minister of lying to Parliament earlier this year when he told the Portfolio Committee on Police that he did not know North West businessman Brown Mogotsi.
