The former DA leader described the incident as surreal.

In an Instagram post, Maimane said three gunmen stormed the bar barely 30 minutes after he and his brother-in-law had arrived.

He said the gunmen proceeded to rob patrons at every table.

"I don’t give up on our crime, we have to fight. We have to ensure policing is effective and the criminal justice system works. The Phangela’s, ADT, Fidelity, Metro police need to form a greater part of localised policing.

“Put fear back on criminals and not on citizens. We have a long way to go, starting with best minister of police and a government that will ensure the safety of its citizens."

Western Cape police spokesperson Wesley Twigg confirmed a case of business robbery is being investigated.

"According to reports, unknown suspects entered the restaurant and threatened the supervisor and staff with a firearm. The suspects fled the scene with cellular telephones and an undisclosed amount of cash. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported," Twigg said in a statement.

Maimane said he doubts police will be able to arrest the suspects.

"I must be honest, not sure those guys will get arrested. I hope so, it will be less criminals on the road [sic]."
