Attackers pelted the accused with stones after they left a court building in Anguwan Jaki in Bauchi State, where they were denied bail.

At least 100 homosexuals had been arrested since Jonathan signed off on the law on January15 that will allow for jail terms of up to 14 years, Nigerian human rights activist Dorothy Aken'Ova told dpa.

"It's a witch hunt. There is an atmosphere of fear. Everyone has gone into hiding," said Aken'Ova.

The new bill stipulates jail sentences for anyone who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies or organisations or anyone who, publicly engages in a same sex  relationship.
