After visiting the school on Friday, Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi emphasised there are two nearby schools, which have a total of nine unused classrooms, which can also be used as an interim alternative for the first quarter.

"The report of the structural engineers indicates that it's only the roofing, the structure is still in-tact, so we just have to fix the roof," said Lesufi, saying the Department will try and secure the budget to do this.

Schooling is set to resume on 15 January though and the department will provide learning materials, including textbooks and stationery, to replace those lost during the fire incident.

Lesufi says the issue of security is not the responsibility of his department, but of the police.

This after a member of the community complained about a lack of security personnel to protect the school from criminal activities, which is high in the area
