Momentum to pay KZN widow amid fierce public pressure
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Life insurer, Momentum has vowed to pay-out a R2.4 million claim to the family of a Durban man who died in a botched hijacking.
Momentum initially declined to pay-out Nathan Ganas’ wife after he failed to disclose that he suffered from high blood sugar levels.
In a statement, Momentum says the pay-out will be funded from its profits.
“The guarantee will pay out when the death was a direct result of violent crime, even when material medical non-disclosure impacts the legitimacy of the contract.”
Ganas was shot dead during a botched hijacking in the driveway of his home after his wife came under attack.
Years before that, he'd taken out life insurance with Momentum.

Social media users have lambasted the company, questioning Momentum's ethics and alluding that it should pay out because his high blood sugar was not the cause of his death.
“The guarantee will apply immediately to all our life cover clients and will be applied retrospectively. We are identifying clients who were impacted in this way.”
