Monumental flag ‘critical’ in reinforcing cohesion - Gungubele
Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele maintains the controversial R22 million monumental flag would reinforce social cohesion.
Gungubele was speaking at the outcomes of the post-cabinet meeting in Pretoria on Thursday.
Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa put the project on review following public backlash over the costs involved.
“I keep on again and repeating that if people can look at the content of the flag they will find that it is a critical flag that will actually reinforce cohesion in South Africa.
“But the issue of cost is what the Minister is reviewing especially in the context of the contesting needs of our country like access to water, poverty and access to food.”

The controversial flag sent tongues wagging when it was announced by Mthethwa.
The minister initially defended the project amid criticism by opposition parties and the public.
Mthethwa later backtracked and put the project on review, with President Cyril Ramaphosa also publicly weighing in, and saying the project should be scrapped given the country’s economic reality.
