Mop-up operations continues in storm-lashed NMB
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality continued with mopping-up operations on Tuesday as the heavy rains that lashed the metro during the Heritage Day long weekend began to subside.
It said waterlogged roads and power outages were still receiving attention.
Mayor Gary van Niekerk said additional manpower had been called in to assist with the restoration of electricity supply "as soon as possible".
"A section of Seaview Road is waterlogged, with the water at a depth of approximately 20cm.
"The dip area of Third Avenue, Newton Park, is also still closed due to the Baakens River being in full flow."
The combined dam levels rose by almost one percentage point since Friday, increasing slightly from 48.5% to 49.6%.
"However, we would like to encourage residents to keep on using water sparingly as restrictions are still in place, due to the prevailing drought," Van Niekerk said in a statement.
The mayor said the water supply system remained unstable and critical due to power outages on Sunday affecting water production and conveyance at the Nooitgedacht Water Treatment Works and the Motherwell
Pump Station.
Supply to Nooitgedacht was restored on Sunday evening and the Motherwell Pump Station on Monday afternoon.
"However, we are very concerned about supply to Kariega as the water trunk main, conveying water from the Groendal dam to the Kabah Water Treatment Works, failed early Sunday morning," said Van Niekerk.
"This means that the treatment of water had to stop.
"Unfortunately, the pipeline could not be fixed as yet as it is located next to a river making access to the pipeline impossible due to the floods."
