The storms rolled into KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday night.

At least five people lost their lives in Margate.

Cooperative Governance MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi was among the officials who descended on the town yesterday.

"Four of them drowned, three of them were found in a doctor's car. He was travelling with two passengers. The other was found in another area on the same river. The fifth victim was found in a house that was struck by lightning."

Several roads remain closed in Margate, and some businesses on the beachfront were washed away when a stream overflowed. Sewer infrastructure and traffic lights were severely damaged.

The power's still out in some areas.

A car dealership was one of the worst affected businesses, with over seven vehicles washed away.

Sithole-Moloi says the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality also temporarily closed its 10 beaches as a precautionary measure.

"The assessment is continuing because it is not only in Ray Nkonyeni, we also have damage in Umzumbe. Teams are on the sites."

Two people were injured in Umgababa, south of Durban.

Over 35 homes were damaged by heavy rains in eThekwini, affecting 160 people.
