The roadblocks came a day after Premier Sihle Zikalala said there was a need for stricter measures to prevent more fatalities.

KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 22 of South Africa’s 54 deaths by Monday morning.

Zikalala says there were some 30 roadblocks on Monday leading into the Durban CBD and surrounding townships.

"It is clear that the majority of South Africans are adhering to the regulations. But there are those people who are still travelling up and down without permits and without following regulations, hence the number of arrests that are taking place," Zikalala said at one of the roadblocks.

Zikalala added that provincial health department is also busy with screening and testing at various hotspots.

"We are calling on people to stay at home, we would want to see eThekhwini flattening the curve of Covid-19. The roadblocks are going to continue until we are satisfied that people are adhering to regulations."

Zikalala says they have noticed that some people are still selling alcohol through back doors.

He say the number of arrests in KZN  since lockdown is more than 10,000.
