The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal says at least 320 000 pupils have been affected by the recent flooding in the province.

The destruction wreaked by the storms and subsequent flooding has led to some 350 schools being unable to open their doors this week.
KZN Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu says the damage is widespread.
"So far we estimate that 320 000 learners have been affected, but obviously as the schools open today and in the coming days, that is where we will be able to verify the figures.

"That is why it was important for us to open the schools so that we get this information. We will act on the basis of that information.”
Last week the Department of Basic Education announced that 57 pupils lost their lives as a result of the floods.
The death toll stands at 443, while more than 40 000 people have been displaced.
