The latest arrests bring to five the number of suspects taken in following the incident at the Savanah Mall when a group of armed robbers stormed a jewellery store.

The gang made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery and one of the men shot and killed a mall security guard who happened by on the scene.

Two suspects were arrested on Wednesday hours after the robbery after being positively linked via CCTV footage.

Polokwane police spokesman Captain Ntobeng Phala said three more suspects were tracked by the police’s Organised Crime Unit on Thursday morning and found hiding at a house in Seshego. He added that police were still looking for more suspects.

“We are very optimistic that we will arrest the remaining suspects. Our members are still busy investigating the tracks, and we are on right track and we will arrest them,” said Phala.

The guard who was killed had apparently just bought himself lunch and reacted after he heard screams for help from the store staff as the robbers were fleeing. The identity of the guard has not yet been disclosed.

Police said the suspects fled the scene in a Toyota bakkie, a BMW and a new Chevrolet bakkie.
