More calls for Mahumapelo to go

Calls for embattled North West Premier Supra Muhamapelo to vacate his position are growing louder.

The Concerned Citizens of South African (CSA), an organisation made up of African National Congress (ANC) members, have not only called on Mahumapelo to step down but also for the province’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) to be dissolved.

“This man Supra does not have support. I don’t know why the NWC and the NEC are afraid to take a decision to dissolve the PEC because it is clear that the president has invoked section 100 of the constitution. It is clear that there is no governance in the province,” CSA member Crosby Maema told the media in Johannesburg on Monday.

The CSA has also questioned Mahumapelo’s hand in appointing acting premier Wendy Nelson.

Last week the province’s PEC came out in defence of Mahumapelo, ordering him to take special leave instead of resigning.

The CSA, however, believes Nelson’s appointment to be unconstitutional.

“The processes appointing the acting premier were procedurally flawed. In fact, I am worried about the speaker because the speaker is the custodian of the constitution in that legislature. She was supposed to advise, if she is not a stooge in that PEC to tell Mahumapelo that you are not applying the law correctly,” Maema said.

North West was placed under administration by national government at the weekend amid a crippling strike in the health sector and violent protests by residents.

This is the first time that the national government has invoked section 100 of the constitution for an entire province.

Section 100 of the constitution states that national government may intervene in a province when it cannot fulfil its duties.
