More needs to be done to address youth unemployment: Makhura
Updated | By Samkele Maseko
As South Africa commemorates 40 years since the Soweto Youth uprising, Premier David Makhura interacted with 40 year-old professionals to try and find solutions to rising youth unemployment on Monday morning.
Makhura said the youth is hungry for a better life and it's up to government and business to find the answers.
The Premier added that lessons must be drawn from the Fees Must Fall protests.
He said the movement showed that the current youth has found its voice, much like the class of 1976.
"What we have been doing so far is not enough to solve the problem. The scale of the problem is getting to a crisis now, so we need a radical shift in addressing the challenges facing our youth. Let's give them hope. I know that having interacted with the youth, many of them are saying 'we are ready, we just need a helping hand, not a handout'," Makhura said.
Makhura said stakeholders must ask themselves whether they were doing enough to empower the youth.
