More than R1.9bn needed to fix KZN – Zikalala

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala says his province needs more than R1.9 billion to repair the damage caused by the recent floods.
Briefing the media on Sunday, Zikalala said the number of people killed in the floods remains at 435 while 54 people are still unaccounted for.
“A total of 6,278 people are currently homeless, 55 people have been injured and the number of those who remain in shelters is 7,245 people in eThekwini, 245 people in KwaDukuza shelters.
“Although the government has reprioritised R1 billion towards disaster relief interventions, we need more than R1.9 billion to complete our work. Our plans are to ensure that as from the end of the week, we will set up 4 396 temporary accommodations.”
He said government has started with the construction of temporary housing units for the displaced people.
