The three week go-slow at Gauteng mortuaries led to many families being unable to bury their loves ones.

Nehawu members have since signed an agreement with the Gauteng Department of Health and returned to work on Monday.

Nehawu spokesperson Khaya Xaba, however, is urging the public to be patient.

"Our members are putting in overtime, which the department will remunerate, to deal with the backlog," says Xaba.

Xaba says they expect the backlog to be cleared soon.

But according to the DA's Jack Bloom, the backlog is still about 200 bodies.

"Autopsies are taking more than 7 days instead of one day, to the great distress of families who have to delay funerals," says Bloom.
