Mother and baby killed in Joburg shack fire

A 31-year-old woman and her two-month-old baby have been killed after a fire ripped through the George Goch informal settlement in Johannesburg.

Both victims were burnt beyond recognition after their shack caught fire in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, Robert Mulaudzi, says it seems the fire was started by an unattended candle.
Eleven other shacks were also damaged by the fire, but no other injuries were reported.
"The other affected families are being assisted by our officials," says Mulaudzi.
"We just want to urge our residents, especially the residents of our most vulnerable communities, to look after their heating and lighting appliances - things like candles and paraffin stoves - to not keep them unattended, so that we can avoid devastating fires like these."
