Mother, brother handed life sentence for toddler’s ritual killing

A mother and her brother have both been handed three life sentences by the High Court in Johannesburg High Court for the murder and rape of the woman’s 2-year-old daughter.
Josephine Bombando was the victim of a ritual killing performed by her mother Esther Brown and her uncle Mike Brown at a hotel in Midrand in 2021.
The High Court convicted the pair of rape, murder and the contravention of the Immigration Act.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) in Gauteng Phindi Mjonondwane welcomed the sentence handed down to the pair.

"The NPA commends the work done by the investigating officer Sergeant Phetole Moses Semosa and Advocate Nel in delivering justice to the father of the minor and the rest of the family.
“Esther and Mike Mwenda Brown have been sentenced to three life terms and a further 18 months’ imprisonment each.”
