Mother, two kids killed in Witbank shack fire
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
A fire at an informal settlement in Emalahleni has claimed the lives of a mother and her two children.
The blaze ripped through their home in the early hours of Friday morning.
The mother and her two children, aged four and five, were burnt beyond recognition when their shack caught alight at Klarinet Extention 3.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala says they suspect the mother left the stove on for warmth.
"It is said that the mother could have left a two plate stove on and it is suspected that the family might have been using the stove to warm themselves up as it was cold.
"Further allegations is that the mother fell asleep whilst the stove was still on.
"The shack caught fire and engulfed in flames with the mother and the two minors inside. The three could not be saved and were unfortunately certified dead on the scene.
"The father allegedly had just left them for shopping,” Mohlala added.
