Motorists urged to make use of extended hours to renew driving licences
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula says the doors of license and testing centres will be open for an additional two hours on Saturdays and Sundays..
"Opening on weekends, both Saturday and Sunday until the 31st of May, allowing walk-ins in addition to online bookings in Gauteng and Eastern Cape, where online bookings are operational until 31st May.
“In essence, this means that motorists who show up at the DLTC to renew their license will not be turned away because they didn't make a booking,” he told the media on Thursday.
The measures comes as government battles to clear the backlog of expired driving licences around the country.
Mbalula said they've managed to produce a total of 789 600 driving licence cards - leaving a backlog of over 500 000 - by Wednesday.
He urged motorists to use this opportunity ahead of the final deadline of May 5.
"We will step up our law enforcement interventions in order to penalise those who wilfully disregard the law and failed to renew their expired licences," Mbalula warned.
