Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal are the worst affected.

In the latest incident, a woman's vehicle was hit along the N12 near the Golden Highway in Johannesburg on Friday morning.

The Automobile Association's (AA) Layton Beard has warned motorists to avoid driving on roads where rock throwing is a common occurrence.

Police spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo says rock throwing is extremely difficult to police due to the random nature of the crime.

Naidoo has urged motorists to keep driving should their vehicle be hit by a rock.

"If they are able to drive, to drive away cautiously and go to the next stop. It might be a service stop or police station. Criminals try and get motorists to stop and rob them, if motorists can proceed to drive away from that scene it will help prevent them become further victims of crime."

Naidoo denies that this type of crime is on the increase.
