Motshekga confident that maths and science ranking will improve

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is confident, come 2019 SA would've improved its ranking in maths and science.

The latest Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) shows South African learners still performing poorly in these subjects.
South African Grade 5 and grade 9 learners were among the worst performing pupils in both subjects.
Executive at the Human Sciences Research Council, Vijay Reddy says although we're are amongst the lowest ranking countries, we are also the most improved.
"That achievement or that kind of change from 'very low' to 'low' gives us hope and it gives us an indication that change is possible. It's not that we are stuck at the bottom and we cannot change from that," says Reddy.
Motshekga described the 2015 results as encouraging, saying the department is clearly doing something right.
"It is now up to critical players in the sector to energise the findings into focused interventions that can lift the country's performance in Mathematics and Science to levels we all can be proud off," says Motshekga.
