Motshekga lauds Natu’s Allen Thompson for contribution to teaching

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has lauded the late Allen Thompson for his contribution to the sector.
President of the National Teachers’ Union (Natu), Thompson died on Monday after contracting Covid-19.
In a statement on Tuesday, Motshekga expressed her shock and sadness following Thompson’s passing.
“In October I shared a stage with him in Newcastle at a Natu ceremony. That event will remain forever etched in my mind. Amongst others they had families of their members who had perished from Covid-19 and a moving ceremony indeed.
“Thompson gave of his time, talent and soul. I shared a lot of ideas with him on different matters with matric rewrite as the latest matter I shared views with him on. With Thompson we had a scholar and a patriot,” said Motshekga.
Thompson was elected president of the union in 2018.
“Mr Thompson was a fearless leader who made a huge contribution to the sector,” Motshekga added.
Tributes have been pouring in for the unionist.
The National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) and the Educators’ Union of South Africa (EUSA) are among the unions to offer their condolences to the family and friends of Thompson.
