Basic education minister Angie Motshekga has expressed her shock following the death of an African National Congress (ANC) MP, Timothy Khoza.
Khoza was a member of Parliament’s portfolio committee on basic education.
Motshekga says committee members are the ones who hold her department to account.

Education ministry spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says the minister is devastated as she had worked closely with the MP for many years.
“She is shocked because these are the people who she works with very closely. Every week we travel to Cape Town to meet them. Even when this accident happened, they were on duty – which shows they are dedicated people and want the best for the education system,” Mhlanga says.
The ANC’s Chief Whip office confirmed the deceased was a member of the ANC.
Khoza died in a car crash near Paarl on Wednesday morning.
Three other MPs were seriously injured.
“It is going to be a very difficult time for all members as they mourn this loss and recover from this tragedy,” Mhlanga says.
