Motshekga: We are ready for 2016 school year
Updated | By MornéJK
The minister of basic education, Angie Motshekga has given the greenlight and says her department is ready to accommodate thousands of learners who are heading back to school today.
Motshekga told @JacaNews this morning that she is worried about learners who haven't been registered.
"My biggest concern for today is 'unannounced learners' at schools in city regions," Motshekga said.
Schools in the city regions attract many unregistered learners and parents have already started queuing from yesterday to get their children placed.
"This might result in a placement crisis," Motshekga added.
The minister said that learners who have been turned away at schools in their area should report to the education department in their district.
She said: "When schools have declared closed, then they [learners] have to go to the district."
Unplaced learners should not go to other schools to find spaces as it's the district's responsibility to place them.
Motshekga has given the assurance that all textbooks will be delivered on time, despite there being some delays in textbook deliveries to the Western Cape.
She has given officials 10 days to deliver textbooks to the Western Cape while she doesn't expect any problems with textbooks in Limpopo this year.
