Motsoaledi dismisses Senkubuge’s Uganda immigration claims

This comes after an unknown person laid charges against Senkubuge questioning whether she was eligible to hold a council seat.

No Friday, Senkubuge resigned as both a councillor and MMC follows the release of an audio recording of her and Tshwane Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa.

Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi  says documents available to his department show that Senkubuge’s parents immigrated to the former Transkei from Uganda in 1983.

Motsoaledi has descried the allegation that Senkubuge entered the country in 2011 and naturalized as a citizen in August 2018 as “grossly wrong”.

“We went to retrieve the case file which gives all the information as far as back as 36 years ago,” says Motsoaledi.

The former Transkei government exempted her parent who came to work for the Department of Education.

Senkubuge was born a year later in 1984.

Motsoaledi says all people who were in Transkei were transferred into South Africa in terms of the laws which were agreed to during the transition from apartheid to democracy.

“As to contemporary issues as to her eligibility to registration and voting, is a subject to the police investigation and together with the IEC, we are investigating the matter.

“We would not want to offer you half-baked answers.”

Motsoaledi was addressing the media at the department’s head offices in Pretoria on Sunday morning.

The South African Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed that Senkubuge was verified as a citizen and thus placed voters roll.
