Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says he’s impressed with the rollout of Covid vaccines to the department’s employees.
More than 8000 officials have been listed to the jab.
Motsoaledi visited two of the vaccine sites in Ekurhuleni on Wednesday to assess the week’s work.
He said he could finally breathe a sigh of relief following months of concern that essential workers in his department were at high risk.
“As you are aware, they are also frontline staff in their offices because they come in contact with members of the public but more specifically they get in contact with members of the public who are coming to collect death certificates of relatives who may have died of Covid.
“Home Affairs officials also get in contact with funeral undertakers who are coming to collect death certificates for their clients.”

More than 1000 Home Affairs officials have been infected since the start of the pandemic and at least 40 Home Affairs officials have succumbed to Covid related complications.
“The problem is whenever one of them is infected we close the Home Affairs office for disinfection and we close it for two to three days and there are no services during that period. That’s why they had to get vaccinated,” Motsoaledi added.
“I am quite happy. I asked the employees themselves and the officials, they are happy about what is going on in terms of their vaccination. We have got no complaints at all.”
According to Motsoaledi, there are at least 100 mobile trucks across the country on standby to assist with disruptions at the various service offices.
