Motsoaledi moves to beef up borders with 200 guards appointed

Home Affairs Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has moved to secure the country’s border by appointing a group of 200 border guards.
Motsoaledi introduced the group at the launch of the new Border Management Authority (BMA) programme at the Beit-Bridge border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe on Thursday.
The programme aims to strengthen the country’s border security amid ongoing criticisms of government's failure to manage the borders.
Motsoaledi says the authority will be moved out of the department next year to be a stand-alone entity that tackles the country’s border security challenges.
“At the present moment, the Boarder Management Authority is a branch incubated in the department of Home Affairs,”says Motsoaledi.
“The commissioner who is heading it has got the same status and is at the same level with the commissioner of the national police.
“His job is here, he is the commissioner of boarders, but from the 1st of April 2023, the Boarder Management Authority will move out of home affairs and be a schedule 3 entity, which is a standalone entity responsible for our border security,” says Motsoaledi
