The branch, which has been in operation since February, has already seen over 900 people make use of the various services provided by the Department of Home Affairs.

“During my budget speech last year, I announced that we want to establish multiple platforms through which people get to Home Affairs offices," the minister said on Monday morning.

"At that time, we had already established Home Affairs in banks. We then said we want to establish Home Affairs Offices in malls around the country. This is because malls have ample space, very open and no congestion. They have shelter where you do not need to queue in the sun or rain.

"We said that we will open here and if it works, we will go to Cresta Mall in Johannesburg, then to Pavilion in eThekwini and then to Tyger Valley in Cape Town.”

The Department of Home Affairs is also making use of 110 mobile trucks that travel countrywide to assist South Africans who are applying for identity documents.

It has since added 20 more to its fleet and has plans to add 100 more before the end of the year.

“We also want to take our services to people. All these years Home Affairs has had 100 mobile units, but we have increased that number by 20 today. By the end of this year or early next year they would’ve increased by 120%,” added Motsoaledi.
