Mpumalanga 20 traffic officers short over accommodation dispute
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says the officers have brought it and government into disrepute.
Mpumalanga roads are 20 traffic officials short after a group refused to accept accommodation arranged for them.
The RTMC has now condemned their conduct, claiming they have "undermined government efforts to improve safety on the roads over the Easter period."
It is still unclear as to exactly what led to the dispute, but the RTMC's Simon Zwane says the officers simply refused to share the rooms.
"Accommodation had been provided to them, but they want to dictate terms as to how the accommodation should be," says Zwane.
While their concerns were being addressed, the officers simply refused to cooperate, he explains further.
Zwane says they are taking steps to resolve the situation, adding the officers will also be held accountable.
More than 170 National Traffic Police officers have been deployed nationwide to assist in road safety operations over the long weekend.
Zwane says despite the incident, they will still be able to police the roads with the assistance of SAPS and provincial traffic authorities.
