Eight others were seriously injured, while a ninth person sustained minor injuries, spokesman Joseph Mabuza said.

They were taken to a hospital in Elukwatini for treatment.

The accident happened at a T-junction on a road between Waverly and the Oshoek border post into Swaziland around 6.30am on Thursday.

"A truck was using the road and a bakkie failed to stop at the stop sign at the T-junction and collided with the truck," he said.

Six of those killed were from the bakkie, including the driver.

The truck was hit on the side and the driver was not injured, he said.

The province's community safety MEC Vusi Shongwe sent his condolences to the affected families, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

"We must all work with government to eradicate road crashes which often disintegrates families with some children losing their parents and others losing breadwinners," he said in a statement.

Police were investigating.
