Mpumalanga cop killed in supermarket robbery
Police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt for an unknown number of suspects who shot and killed a police officer during an armed robbery at a supermarket in Masoyi, outside White River.
Sergeant Vusi Siwela (38) and his colleague were responding to a business burglary on Monday morning when he was shot and killed.
The other officer was rushed to hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds.
Police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala says the suspects detonated the supermarket door with explosives to gain entry.
"After obtaining information about the burglary, the two members rushed to the scene; however, they were confronted with a hail of bullets from the armed suspects.
"It was during this time when the two members were shot, and sadly, Sergeant Siwela succumbed to gunshot wounds whilst his colleague sustained some injuries."
Mohlala says the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes from the supermarket.
