Bertus Steenberg was dead outside his home in Ogies on Monday.

It’s understood his family had last spoken to him on Thursday.

The concerned relatives contacted neighbours when Steenberg failed to return their calls.

Provincial police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi says the pensioner’s home was ransacked, before the suspects made off with some of his belongings, including his car.

“Information at police disposal indicates that Mr Bertus Steenberg, who was residing alone at Leeupoort Farm, was attacked by his assailants where they assaulted as well as robbed him of his belongings.

“The man was then strangled to death before the suspects fled the scene with his white Toyota Hilux bakkie.”

Hlathi adds the neighbours who made the grisly discovery found Steenberg lying motionless and tied to his other vehicle.

“Police and medical personnel were notified about the sad incident where he was certified dead by the paramedics at the scene.

“Police management has strongly condemned the incident where a pensioner's life was heartlessly ended by greedy criminals and have made a clarion call to anyone with information that can assist in their investigation.”
