The elderly man, linked to a private security company, was found with 106 firearms, including 14 rifles, 84 pistols, eight shotguns and 1074 rounds of ammunition.

Some of the firearms were hidden in his bed and the wardrobe.

He is expected to appear in the Chief Albert Luthuli Magistrate's court on Friday.

Police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli says the suspect did not have licences for some of the firearms.

"Further investigation showed that the man was in some way part of a certain security company but was suspected to be non-compliant. The team came up with a plan to check if he is compliant with the PSIRA regulations.

"Police discovered that licences for some of the firearms, which could be owned by a certain security company, had already expired. The suspect could not account for about 20 firearms."

"At this stage, police cannot rule out the possibility of adding extra charges against the suspect as the investigation continues, in relation to contravention of the Firearms Control Act."
