Mpumalanga police are hunting for the suspected leader of a local gang running an extortion racket.
The suspect managed to escape following a shootout between the gang and police in Kwaggafontein on Monday.
One of the suspects was shot and killed, while two of his accomplices were wounded.
The suspects are linked to a series of crimes, including extortion and attempted murder.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli says the fourth suspect managed to evade arrest.
“One of the suspects, who is believed to be a ringleader, managed to escape, and we suspect that he could be approaching medical facilities.
“Therefore, we urge members of the public, particularly staff at hospitals and other medical facilities, to remain vigilant and report any individuals who present themselves with gunshot wounds or injuries consistent with a recent violent encounter.
“A 72-hour plan has been activated with all role players on board to trace the outstanding injured suspect,” Mdhluli said.
